CAWI Study: Lots of Data, Easy Analysis, but Limited Control

Badanie CAWI – dużo danych łatwa analiza ale mała kontrola - Artykuł ekspercki CCIG Group

The CAWI Study, or “Computer Assisted Web Interview”, is one of the developing electronic techniques for economic quantitative data collection. It is conducted using a computer program, an internet questionnaire, in which respondents fill out the survey themselves.

This computer assisted web interviewing methodology has gained popularity thanks to its simplicity of implementation and low cost of conducting the study. It represents a significant advancement in data collection methods for market research. This approach is often referred to as web interviewing or CAWI.

    Main Advantages of CAWI Surveys

The use of tests distributed via the internet allows for surveying an unlimited number of respondents at the same time. This provides the opportunity to collect large amounts of data, as the presence of a researcher (interviewer) is not needed for each individual survey. The ability to conduct a web interview with a large audience simultaneously is a key benefit.

Respondents do not have the opportunity to ask questions to the interviewer or be influenced by prompts. This positively affects the reliability of the answers by maintaining the same study conditions for each participant. This standardized approach is crucial for reliable survey data. The lack of an interviewer means consistent survey delivery.

Thanks to anonymity, the self-presentation bias on responses is reduced. Respondents feel less need to answer in a way that makes them look positive in the eyes of others – their answers are more “true”. This can lead to more candid survey responses and honest feedback.

By moving through subsequent questions depending on the answers, we can set up hiding or showing additional questions – what we know as “if you answered ‘No,’ go directly to question 18”. This is known as skip logic. The cawi questionnaire can manage this automatically, as well as the time allocated for completion. It is also possible to set mandatory and optional questions, so we can be sure that the surveyed person will give us all the answers we care about. Effective questionnaire design utilizes these capabilities. This ensures the respondent provides the desired answer type, like a closed-ended or open-ended question.

Among the advantages of this form, we can also include freedom from limitations related to the location of the internet study. Computer assisted web data collection can take place from any location on earth with internet access and at any time of day, making it easy to reach respondents. Therefore, there is no need to incur costs related to providing a study location. People are more willing to participate in an internet study because they don’t have to travel anywhere. This method allows you to customize surveys for specific geographical or demographic targets. It’s an efficient way of gathering data.

For online studies of target groups, elements increasing attractiveness can be used. Add multimedia like video files, voice recordings, and images to questions, which the respondent answers independently at their convenience and place. This makes the online survey more engaging. Such question formats help help the respondent engage more deeply. The results of survey research can be quickly read in real time thanks to their automatic transfer to spreadsheets, e.g., in Excel.

This real-time data analysis is a significant advantage. This visualization of data helps in quick insights. A “smart” cawi system can provide immediate feedback.

    Disadvantages of CAWI Study

However, the implementation of quantitative research methods using the CAWI method also has disadvantages that must be considered when choosing this methodology.

Questionnaires must have a good introduction describing the study, which will clarify doubts of the respondents that would normally be explained by the researcher. This is crucial for a smooth survey design.

The whole thing cannot be too long and demanding, as it is easy to lose the respondent’s attention. The surveyed person, seeing how many questions are still ahead, may lose interest and start marking answers in a more or less random way or will not finish filling out the questionnaire and will not submit the results. A short introduction is therefore vital.

Another problem is low control during the study. We cannot control whether the respondent is focused only on providing one answer or if they are using, for example, the help of third parties or information from the internet to answer the questionnaire. We do not know if they have received prior communication, that might influence their responses. This lack of control significantly impacts the final reliability of the collected data, thus affecting the data quality of a CAWI.

A diminishing, but still existing, disadvantage is the requirement of internet access and computer literacy to receive an invitation to complete the questionnaire via online surveys or interviews. This technique is currently used primarily in developed countries. Access via a mobile device is helping to mitigate this.

How to Increase Control over CAWI Study and Improve Data Quality?

Limited control over the study process forces us to utilize all tools that increase the reliability of answers, such as:

    • a counter with a time limit restricting the possibility of interrupting the study and breaks,
    • monitoring tab changes during the study,
    • a timer for how long it took to complete the study, if we are not using a time limit, to check whether the surveyed persons did not complete the questionnaire in a hurry,
    • introducing an additional field at the end with a satisfaction rating of the study and the possibility to share comments, so we know if something might have been, for example, unclear to the person filling it out. These measures optimize the cawi survey process. The goal is to monitor data quality and correct errors where possible.

In addition to CAWI, computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) also offers a structured approach to data collection, often guided by a predefined template. When conducting such studies, a clear notification process can be established to inform respondents about the survey’s purpose and scope. Researchers can also apply a quota system to ensure a representative sample from various demographic groups.

CATI is usually conducted by a live interviewer, which provides greater control over the process. The interviewer can guide the respondent through the questionnaire, clarify any misunderstandings, and ensure that questions are interpreted as intended—leading to higher-quality and more consistent data.

    Where CAWI method best suited?

The CAWI method, thanks to its universality and low costs, finds wide application in various research panels.

It is ideal in situations where it is necessary to quickly, efficiently, and relatively cheaply reach a large number of respondents. Thanks to the possibility of adapting questionnaires to specific needs, this method works excellently in market research and public opinion research. It can be used to assess consumer reactions to new products, research market trends, and in social research, such as analyzing attitudes and behaviors.

Additionally, the CAWI method is exceptionally useful in marketing research. It allows for efficient testing of the effectiveness of advertising campaigns and understanding consumer needs. Thanks to the speed and reach offered by the internet, companies can obtain valuable insights into how their products and services are received on the market. This makes web surveys a powerful tool. This contributes to the quality of a CAWI market research and data collection method.

In the education and science sector, the CAWI method facilitates data collection for research papers and surveys for student papers. It enables students and scientists to efficiently conduct studies that require collecting large amounts of information in a short time.

Furthermore, this method is invaluable in conducting social or public opinion and political research. It allows for a quick assessment of public opinion on important social and political topics, providing organizations and decision-makers with up-to-date data that can influence policy and strategy formulation. This is achieved by delivering questions in a logical flow.

Finally, the CAWI method is indispensable in situations where flexibility in research is required – for example, in international research projects where participants can fill out surveys in their preferred language and at their convenience. Online questionnaires can be easily deployed.

Other Related Methods of Quantitative Research

In addition to the discussed CAWI, there are also similar computer assisted data collection techniques, such as CATI and CAPI. They enable more interactive and controlled conduct of research. These methods allow for real-time research, increasing the reliability and precision of the collected information. They are particularly useful in cases where interaction with the person conducting the research is required. These are different types of support in research, offering both qualitative and quantitative data insights.

CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) involves conducting an interview over the phone. This form may be more attractive to some respondents because they do not have to read questions and do not need access to a computer or the internet – only a phone. This method may prove more effective when we want to study older people. The disadvantages are certainly higher cost and slower surveying compared to CAWI, as we need a researcher to conduct each study.

CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview) is a face-to-face method with the surveyed person, but still with the help of electronic devices, as verbally given answers are immediately marked by the researcher on the device and sent to the cloud, or a data file. This option can be used live, for example, in shopping malls, where the researcher approaches a passerby. The disadvantage is the cost of the researcher’s time, as well as the required study location.

Benefits and Challenges of the CAWI Method

The Computer-Assisted Web Interview method is developing dynamically due to its numerous advantages, such as the ability to reach a wide group of respondents via the internet. This is particularly important for market research, where access to diverse target groups is key. Among the challenges of this method is limited control over the process of filling out the survey by respondents, which can affect the quality of the collected data. This highlights the trade-off inherent in CAWI market research and data collection.

The CAWI study, despite its disadvantages, is an extremely valuable tool in today’s world of consumer research. Its flexibility, accessibility, and relatively low cost make this method ideal for large-scale data collection. A web-based platform can implement logic conditions to ensure questionnaire quality.

Alternative methods, such as CATI and CAPI surveys, offer additional benefits in terms of greater control and interaction with respondents, sometimes allowing for more detailed qualitative data. We encourage all those interested in effective and efficient data collection to familiarize themselves with our CATI consumer research services. CCIG Group specialists will help you maximize the potential of this method, providing accurate and reliable results that will be the foundation of your future business decisions.
